Poquoson

Poquoson, Virginia is one of the oldest continuously named cities in Virginia. The name was derived from a Native American word that translates to “great marsh.” The early settlers were drawn to the town because of the water, and it seems Poquoson still has that effect on residents today. The city boasts a small town charm while also remaining in close proximity to military bases, NASA and Huntington Ingalls shipyard.

Poquoson is one of the safest cities in Virginia and is actually safer than 78 percent of other cities in the nation. Poquoson schools are consistently ranked among the top schools in Virginia with Poquoson High School earning the Silver Medal for Best High Schools by U.S. News and World Report

One of the biggest events in Poquoson, and a local favorite, is the Annual Poquoson Seafood Festival. What started as a small celebration to remember Poquoson’s heritage, now draws nearly 50,000 people over the three-day event. During the event, visitors join the locals for boat races, live music and food from favorite local restaurants. Of course, Poquoson homeowners need not wait for a festival – they enjoy all Poquoson has to offer anytime of the year.
