Isle of Wight
The quaint town of Isle of Wight, Virginia is one of the oldest county governments in the United States. Nestled on the banks of the Pagan River and across the shore from Jamestown, English settlers began exploring the region and settling as early as 1607.
The first English plantations were established along the south shore by Puritan colonists, and many of the first buildings still stand today. Favorite early establishments include Saint Luke’s Church (c1632), the oldest church of English foundation, Boykin’s Tavern, which opened in 1800 and is still in use today, and the Old Courthouse of 1750, which is modeled after the Capitol Building in Colonial Williamsburg.
With only 35,000 residents today, Isle of Wight is one of the smaller communities in Hampton Roads. Locals feel safe and at home with crime rates well below national average.
The town’s residents look forward to the annual Isle of Wight County Fair. Held every year in September, Virginians from all over the state join Isle of Wight for entertainment and competition, including 4-H, tractor pulls and pageants.
For homebuyers looking for a small town feel in Hampton Roads, Isle of Wight is the perfect place to start searching for your new home.
